Abstract
Electric motors are characterized by a high degree of efficiency. The resulting losses heat up the motor and, particularly in the case of high performance densities, the operating range is subject to restrictions. To ensure reliable operation, the temperature of the critical component must be checked and lowered by selecting a suitable cooling concept. In the case of a permanent-magnet synchronous motor, the magnets and the copper insulation and the sheet metal packages are temperature-sensitive. In order to be able to calculate component temperatures during the development process, heat sources, heat transport and heat sinks must be modeled.
The present work presents the results of a sensitivity analysis of the heat sources and the properties of the structural changes within a 3D-model. In order to simplify the electric motor used as the basis, analytical boundary conditions are available from the literature as well as data from simplified CFD-simulations. As part of a study, the influence and the necessity of temperature-dependent, local variable losses and material properties are shown. On the basis of the electromagnetic design, the ohmic losses in copper and iron losses are examined. Furthermore, temperature-dependent material properties and the influence of deformation on heat transport are examined.
The results are compared, the findings for the criteria for the design of future electric motor are shown and the developed simulation model is used as a basis for detailed simulations.
