Abstract

A Power Hardware-in-the-Loop (PHIL)-based machine emulation enables testing of electric drives before manufacturing an electric machine prototype. This paper presents PHIL emulation of a Brushless DC (BLDC) machine. Voltage-In-Current-Out (VICO) models are commonly used for machine emulation, although the choice between VICO and Current-In-Voltage-Out (CIVO) models significantly affect emulator configuration and accuracy. This paper aims to design and develop BLDC machine emulation systems based on VICO and CIVO models, explore their respective advantages and implications for accuracy and configuration. A high-performance, high-bandwidth power amplifier is used to emulate the behavior of the BLDC machine. Experimental results from these emulator configurations are obtained to validate and compare the accuracy and utility of the proposed emulation system under different operating conditions.
