VideoZapper: A System for Delivering Personalized Video Content

Abstract

Given the huge amounts of audiovisual materials that are broadcasted every day there is considerable interest in applications that are able to fulfill our need for selecting information. In this paper, we propose a system, VideoZapper, which can personalize and help to select audiovisual content based on its properties (represented as metadata descriptors) and mainly on the past experience of other users with that material. The content is selected based on the user profile and the description of each of the segments to be presented. A second level of selection is based on a “virtual edition” of the content, taking into account what previous users/viewers did. The paper presents related personalization and metadata approaches, the rational and principles for continuous media personalization, our current architecture and system, and preliminary experiences.

Miguel Boavida finished his Master degree on Computer Science at FTC/UNL (New University of Lisbon) five years ago and since then he is a member of the IMG (Interactive Multimedia Group) also in the FCT/UNL. He is doing a Ph.D., with a major focus on personalization and adaptive systems. He currently teaches several courses at the EST/IPS (Polytechnic Institute of Setubal–School of Technology), mostly related with Multimedia Systems and Database Programming. He has one hobby above all: sailing! Small boats, big boats, windsurfing... everything that floats.

Susana Cabaço finished her major in Computer and Software Engeneering at FCT/UNL (New University of Lisbon, Faculty of Science and Technology) three years ago. She worked as a consultant in the IT business for two years and now she is taking a Master degree on Multimedia Computing (also in FCT/UNL), working in collaboration with the research group IMG (Interactive Multimedia Group). The main theme of her thesis is Continuous Media Personalization. She currently teaches several courses at the EST/IPS (Polytechnic Institute of Set’ubal), mostly related with programming and database systems development and management. She has several hobbies including reading, playing the guitar, sports, and group activities like inline skating, karting, paintball, trekking, and camping.

Nuno Correia is a Professor at the New University of Lisbon, where he conducts courses on Multimedia Computing, Computer Graphics and Image Processing and he heads a research group (IMG) doing work on multimedia information processing, interaction and presentation. He was a researcher at Interval Research Corporation in Palo Alto, California, in 1996/97. Previously, he was a researcher at INESC, Lisbon, Portugal, where he worked on user interfaces for multimedia systems and video indexing. He participated and was work package leader in several EU-funded projects, including Euromath, MADE (Multimedia Application Development Environment) which formed the basis for the ISO international standard PREMO (Programming Environment for Multimedia Objects) and D-ARTS (DVD Authoring Tools). He was Portuguese representative in international standardisation meetings of the MHEG and PREMO standards. He is currently finished the ANTS (Augmented Environments) project and is involved in other mobile multimedia projects, augmented and mixed reality, mobile storytelling (InStory), personalisation and collaborative video annotation. Nuno Correia is the chair of the Multimedia Working Group of the Eurographics association, and associate editor of the International Journal of Image and Graphics published by World Scientific.
