Abstract

In this paper, we describe a novel approach to reduce the mutual coupling between two adjacent microstrip MIMO antennas by using resonator structure. The basic microstrip patch antenna is operated at 5.9 GHz, and the center to center distance between two adjacent antenna elements is kept 0.46λ0. By placing the resonator between two antenna elements, the isolation between antennas is greatly improved as compare to the antenna structure without resonator. Simulation results show that the isolation between the antenna elements is more than 19.5 dB with resonator. The introduction of resonator structure between two antenna elements does not affect the basic antenna characteristics like return loss, radiation pattern, antenna efficiency etc. The prototype antenna, with and without resonator have been fabricated and the photography of the same has been shown in the figure. The antenna may be used in WLAN application.
