Abstract

In this paper, the main aim is to study, simulate and investigate a basic Underwater Optical Wireless Communication System in a direct line of sight (LoS) configuration for different water types i.e. clear seawater and turbid water. In these conditions blue Light Emitting Diode (LED) based transmitter is compared with a blue laser-based transmitter for Non-Return to Zero On–Off keying (NRZ-OOK) modulation. The variations of Q-Factor, minimum Bit Error Rate (BER), Signal power, and Signal to Noise ratio (SNR) are studied with variable distance and variable bit rate. The system performance is analysed by visualising the eye diagrams. This study also emphasises the selection of a suitable frequency of light that can traverse the channel with minimum path loss and a compatible bit rate.
