Abstract

In Vehicular Ad hoc NETwork (VANET), unlike normal messages, critical warning messages (CWMs) are time-critical and any delay at the time of their broadcast may outcome in huge impacts among the vehicles. In addition to the potential impact amongst the nodes, dependable and in-time delivery of warning messages is also precarious. Hence the media access control (MAC) layer parameters should ensure high reliability and high dissemination speed with reduced latency. In this paper, Fuzzy based prioritized message dissemination and cooperative MAC (FPMDC-MAC) protocol is designed. It consists of a priority assignment technique to enhance the delivery of emergency warning messages by considering the direction of movement, message type and severity level. The priorities of CWMs are determined based on their severity level and the priorities of normal messages are determined based on the distance between the vehicle, speed and direction of vehicle and access category, using Fuzzy logic decision model. When a source vehicle intends to transmit a CWM to a target vehicle which lies beyond its transmission range, it initiates the cooperative transmission algorithm. In this algorithm, selected relay nodes make cooperation if there occurs at least one reservation time slot via which it can transfer. Simulation results using NS2 are validated against the analytical results and hence prove that the proposed FPMD-CMAC achieves better normalized throughput, packet delivery ratio with reduced average packet delay.
