Transition from cultural diversity to multiculturalism: perspectives from offshore industry in India

Abstract

Globalization, migration and the increasing diversification of identity patterns within traditionally homogeneous groups have expanded the phenomenon of cultural diversity. Diversity points to the existence of many cultures that are different, heterogeneous and often incommensurable, whereas multiculturalism promotes the acceptance of cultural diversity by encouraging the recognition of minorities by the society and its institutions. In the backdrop of violence in some countries, the present paper explores how organizations are helping in enhancing toleration for other cultures. The present paper explicates how the Indian cities having a concentration of offshore industries are transitioning from cultural diversity to multiculturalism.
