Summary
Education in computer science for electrical and electronics engineers must impart fundamentals of professional software development to students. Due to the key role of object technology, students should become acquainted with the object-oriented model of reasoning as early as possible. Oberon-2 is a statically typed modular-object-oriented programming language specifically suitable for this purpose because it is both lean and clearly structured. We pursue this approach to basic computer science education for engineers at two Schools of Engineering at Reutlingen University. Experience shows that essential object-oriented concepts, methods, and techniques are provided more effectively and more efficiently within this approach than within former approaches. A solid foundation is layed for advanced topics such as operating and real time systems and software engineering.
