Abstract

A compact (\(17 \times 10\,{\text {mm}}^2\)) microstrip patch antenna design has been proposed in this correspondence. This design achieves triple band notch characteristics with circular polarization. The proposed design consists of semi-circular radiating patch and defected ground structure to cover the bandwidths for C/X/Ku/K-band applications. Defected ground is created by the introduction of slot, slit, and copper connecting strip on the ground plane. The triple band notches covering impedance bandwidth 4.94 GHz (4.96–9.9 GHz), 3.6 GHz (11.0–14.6 GHz), and 3.8 GHz (16.20–20 GHz), are obtained for the proposed design. Moreover, this antenna exhibits axial ratio bandwidth \(\le 3\) dB. The proposed antenna resonates in triple band at resonant frequencies of 5.5, 12.4 and 17.3 GHz. Furthermore, the proposed microstrip patch antenna design has been fabricated and the simulation results (obtained by HFSS software) are corroborated by the measured results obtained by vector network analyzer using the fabricated antenna.
