Geo-indistinguishability (Andrés et al., 2013) is a generalization of the formal notion differential privacy (Dwork et al., 2006) to design location privacy-preserving mechanisms with provable privacy guarantees.

Background

Location-Based Services (LBSs) have proliferated with the pervasiveness of smart mobile devices and connectivity. In exchange for their location, geographically contextualized information is sent to users to allow for applications such as assisted navigation, the retrieval of points-of-interest, and even location-based social networks. However, potentially untrustworthy LBS providers or data leakages can lead to unwanted privacy disclosure.

Location Privacy-Preserving mechanisms (LPPMs) can be employed to preserve location privacy, even against the data collector (service provider). Based on the formal notion of differential privacy (Dwork et al., 2006), Geo-indistinguishability has been proposed...
