Abstract
In many companies, the IT department fails to enjoy the recognition and cooperation its members feel it deserves. The authors contend that the root of this problem is organizational, citing evidence from a large scale international survey of IT professionals. They describe a number of specific organizational problems that contribute to the lack of understanding and impede the creation of a flexible and responsive IT department. They then outline a number of potential remedies for those organizational problems and discuss practical ways in which necessary changes might be made, based on the experience of companies which have already addressed the problem.
