Abstract
Diagnostic workstation hanging protocols describe how to lay out radiographic images according to predefined user preferences. In our prior work, we developed the concept of Structured Display Protocols (SDP) that structure the presentation of data according to the diagnostic task. In this work an object-oriented analysis procedure was used to define the workflow (the process model) for a radiology activity as well as the data objects viewed or manipulated in that activity (the data model). Within the workflow there exist specific phases of activity (modes) designed to satisfy specific sub-tasks in the diagnostic process. Some tasks may, or may not, be performed, depending upon the case. These tasks are mapped to mode-specific tools. A critical feature of a SDP is that each viewing mode presents only the data (and tools) relevant to a specific task. The results of each step were represented using specific UML diagrams. From the UML diagrams, structured display protocols were implemented on a publicly available workstation and were then used in routine clinical practice by radiologists and film librarians.
