Abstract
Value creation is nowadays no longer understood as a sequence of corporate activities, but rather as the co-creation of various players in an ecosystem, who often interact with each other via digital platforms. When designing platform-based digital ecosystems, companies aim to foster interaction between ecosystem actors and establish value creation mechanisms through which they profit as platform owners. In this multiple case study, we explore how companies can use collaborative development events, so-called hackathons, to shape platform-based digital ecosystems. We elaborate that companies can use platform hackathons to pursue different goals. In particular, the role of boundary resources differs depending on the platform orientation. Thus, in market-oriented hackathons, boundary resources are the objects to be designed, while in technology-oriented hackathons they act as input factors that should guide the interaction of the actors involved. Our results show how hackathons can be used to design platform-based digital ecosystems and contribute to a better understanding of the potentials and limitations of hackathons.
