Abstract

Big data – according to research firm Gartner – is “high-volume, high-velocity and high-variety information assets that demand cost-effective, innovative forms of information processing for enhanced insight and decision making” [8]. Industry analysts, business strategists, policy makers and marketing executives hail this as a new area for innovation, competition and productivity. This article explores applications and technologies associated with big data and discusses how different communities exploit their data assets. We identify some of the challenges for the adoption of big data in a growing range of scenarios and point to initiatives taken by standards development organizations to address these challenges.
