Petri Nets in the Biosciences

  • Ina Koch

    Ina Koch studied chemistry and graduated in Quantum Chemistry at the University Leipzig. She received her PhD in theoretical computer science. She was a researcher at the Academy of Sciences in Berlin, at the Gesellschaft für Mathematik und Datenverarbeitung in St. Augustin, at the Max-Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine, and at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics. In 2002 she was appointed as Professor for Bioinformatics at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Berlin. In 2005 she was a temporary Full Professor for Bioinformatics at the Friedrich Schiller-University Jena. Since 2010 she is the Head of the Molecular Bioinformatics Department at the Institute of Computer Science at Goethe-University Frankfurt (Main). In 2013 she got a research grant at the Trinity College in Cambridge, UK. Prof. Koch is researching topics in Bioinformatics and Computational Systems Biology since more than 20 years. Her main interests are developing methods for qualitative and quantitative modeling of biochemical systems, including metabolism, signal transduction and gene regulation, applying Petri nets to systems' analysis in biology, developing and applying graph-theoretical methods in Bioinformatics, and studying protein complexes and modeling their formation.

    , Wolfgang Reisig

    Wolfgang Reisig is a full professor at the Computer Science Institute of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Germany. He served as a research assistant and assistant professor at the University of Bonn and at RWTH Aachen, a visiting professor at Hamburg University, a project manager at Gesellschaft für Mathematik und Datenverarbeitung (GMD), and a professor at Technical University of Munich. Prof. Reisig was a senior research at the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) in Berkeley, California in 1997, got the “Lady Davis Visiting Professorship” at the Technion, Haifa (Israel), the Beta Chair of Technical University of Eindhoven, and twice received an IBM Faculty Award for his contribution to Cross-organisational Business Processes and the Analysis of Service Models. Presently he is the speaker of a PhD school on Service Oriented Architectures. Prof. Reisig is a member of the European Academy of Sciences, Academia Europaea. He published and edited numerous books and articles on Petri Net Theory and Applications.

    Falk Schreiber graduated, obtained a PhD and a habilitation in Computer Science from the University of Passau (Germany). In 2001 - 2002 he worked as a Research Fellow and Lecturer at the University of Sydney (Australia). Since 2003, he has been head of a bioinformatics research group at the Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK) Gatersleben (Germany). In 2007 he was appointed professor of Bioinformatics at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (Germany) and additionally Bioinformatics coordinator at the IPK Gatersleben. He is an adjunct professor at Monash University Melbourne (Australia). Prof. Schreiber is researching topics in Bioinformatics and Computational Systems Biology since more than 15 years. His main interests are visual computing and visual analytics of biological data, analysis of structure and dynamics of biological networks, integrative analysis of *omics data, graphical standards for systems biology, as well as modeling and analysis of metabolism.
