Heutige mobile Geräte, wie z.B. Organizer oder Smart Phones, bieten zunehmend die Möglichkeit, mehr als nur Adressen und Termine zu organisieren. Sie können als mobile Internetterminals dienen, mittels derer Emails bearbeitet und Webseiten dargestellt werden können. Der Nutzen solcher Geräte lässt sich jedoch wesentlich steigern, indem man sie ortssensitiv macht. Wir stellen mehrere Möglichkeiten vor, ortssensitive Dienste zu realisieren und argumentieren dafür, einen Großteil der benötigten Intelligenz in eine intelligente Infrastruktur zu stecken, statt in die Geräte selbst. Das vorgestellte System IRREAL stellt ein solches ortssensitives Informationssystem dar, das mit Hilfe von Palm Handhelds und Infrarotübertragung realisiert wurde. Nach der Erläuterung einiger technischer Details und deren Auswirkungen auf die Systemperformance wird gezeigt, wie die in IRREAL entwickelten Konzepte auf neue Technologien übertragen werden können.
Today´s mobile computing devices, such as PDAs and smart mobile phones, increasingly offer functionalities beyond calendar manangement and address books. They serve as mobile internet terminals and allow email and web browsing. The usefulness of such devices can be substantially enhanced by making them location aware. We discuss different approaches to location aware services and argue that most of the intelligence behind such services should be located in the infrastructure rather than the actual device. We present the IRREAL project in which a location sensitive information service was realized by the help of Palm Handheld Organizers and infrared data transmission. After describing several functional details of the system and how they improve its performance, we present some suggestions, how the concepts developed in IRREAL can be transferred onto new emerging technologies.
