Individuals use various methods of learning to assimilate information. Modern online learning has the demand to take various learning styles into teaching design and to form more effective groups for better collaborative learning. This can be important as the way information is provided to students may well affect their ability to understand and remember the information present to them. This paper investigates different learning styles and creates a learning recommendation system to suggest learning groups accordingly. A Java tool is provided by making use of the VARK model including visual, auditory, reading/writing, and kinesthetic learning styles. Responses to a set of questions indicate the learning style(s) of preference, and compare to peers taking the same test. The result of our experiment on 20 university students indicate most students had a dominant learninig style and groups with the same learning styles could be made for improving collaborative learning.
