The perspective we are looking at plants in the last years is dramatically changing, tending away from seeing them as passive entities subject to environmental forces. The new vision is that plants are dynamic and highly sensitive organisms, with complex behaviors actively and competitively foraging for limited resources both above and belowground. Plants can be considered as information-processing organisms with complex communication throughout the individual body. In this article, the importance of the root apex as a sort of ‘command centre’ and source of signals to be directed towards the entire plant is highlighted and discussed. Also, the concept of plants as communicating organisms is presented.
