Online feedback by tests and reporting for elearning and certification programs

Published: 19 May 2004 Publication History

Abstract

The evaluation of eLearning success is an indispensable business requirement of education programs: the easy registration of `visits' to eLearning websites is, however, not sufficient in most cases. Additional metrics from authenticated logins and reports of learning activity and success - as obtained from specific online tests ' are required. The aim is to document the acceptance, progress and return of investment (ROI) of eLearning programs, and set up additional training well tailored to the needs of a specific learning community. An example from a corporate certification program proves the applicability of the proposed processes.

The stated goal of this short paper is to present an exemplar course management platform that can contribute to the overall goal of providing efficient operational support for the delivery of e-training/e-learning programs, and, as a result, make e-learning a profitable business. The authors present an integrated platform called TCmanager, which is not another learning management system, like WebCT, Blackboard, and so on. It is, in fact, a seminar administration system, with an integrated e-learning platform implementing Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORMTM) 1.2 runtime. Although it was not possible to describe all aspects of the platform in such a short paper, the authors gave emphasis to three main functionalities of the TCmanager: integrated administration for e-learning, an authenticated access Internet course/learning activities catalogue, and online tests as part of a certification process. The strength of this paper is that the three above-mentioned functionalities are briefly, but accurately described. However, it was not obvious, after reading this paper, how the TCmanager approach affects the return on investment (ROI) of e-learning programs. There is an increasing interest in the ROI for e-learning. The paper by Conner [1] presents a good introduction to this topic, and gives a list of references to recent papers and books. In conclusion, works like this one are certainly a step forward in the area of supporting and, if possible, measuring the ROI of e-learning programs, which is a complex task, incorporating a variety of administrational, didactic, and technical issues.
