This short piece, about the current state of electoral politics in the US when it comes to the use of technology in voting, points out the various shortfalls of the system brought out during the 2004 presidential election. Whether it be the technical problems (untested systems, security bugs, and lack of testing with different types of voters) or the ethical issues (single vendor e-voting machines, with vendor ties to a specific political party), the paper raises important issues that need to be taken into consideration when determining the direction in which our democracy wants to go with regard to the marriage of technology and polity. Quite rightly, the paper indicates that we are not ready to implement e-voting in this country, and that further testing and experimentation needs to take place. That has been the beauty of this system, however; we are in constant search of how to make things better, and the political system is not exempt from such a quest! Online Computing Reviews Service
