User-centered design in the context of large and distributed projects

Published:21 April 2006Publication History

ABSTRACT

User-centered design (UCD) is a research and product development orientation that utilizes end user or customer information for making better (efficient, usable, enjoyable etc.) and thus commercially successful products. In practice, this is achieved by involving the end user early on, and maintaining this orientation throughout the developmental project. This paper presents lessons learned in EU IST project MobiLife about the management of user-centered design. We reflect best practices of UCD in a setting consisting of complex technological problems being solved by large coalition of geographically distributed partners.
