A terribly scratched teapot

Published: 30 July 2006 Publication History

Abstract

A terribly scratched teapot is only a piece of scratched flat sheet. Once the sheet was illuminated, a teapot appears and its highlight changes depending on the direction of illumination. Observers perceive a three-dimensional surface of the teapot by looking at changes of specular reflection. We have developed a technique called "Scratched 3D" which gives three-dimensional appearance onto almost flat sheets like plastic films. The technique makes anisotropic reflection by forming numbers of scratches referring three-dimensional information modeled in the manner of computer graphics. Using this technique, we can indicate three-dimensional appearance of arbitrary curved surfaces onto the surface of real world without using holography or lenticular.
