Performance evaluation of the physical layer for 10 Gbit/s ethernet passive optical networks

Abstract

This paper presents a physical layer performance evaluation of an Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) upgraded to 10 Gbit/s transmission data rate, considering both transmission directions. The performance evaluation is based on an EPON physical layer simulator, which is briefly described. Moreover, the physical impairments that arise with the data rate upgrade are identified and alternative solutions are analyzed for mitigating these impairments on a 10 Gbit/s EPON, namely the use of optical pre-amplification and of an APD receiver, in the uplink, and the use of external modulation in the downlink transmitter.
