Members of the Computer User Research and Evaluation Laboratory at Carleton University conducted usability tests during development of a 4th generation database programming language. Although the basic usability testing approach can be applied to the development of a programming language, there are several methodological issues that require careful consideration when user testing a language. The issues are outlined below.
