Abstract
There are currently no standard methods to assess and ensure the usability of graphical user interfaces (GUIs). A series of experiments were designed to measure the factors that affect the usability of a common element of GUIs, icons. A procedure for designing effective iconic images based on our results with subjects from widely varying educational and computer backgrounds is described.
