Managing delay and jitter in mesh networks through path-aware distributed transmission scheduling

Published: 01 April 2007 Publication History

Abstract

While usable in single-hop applications, current wireless medium access control (MAC) protocols are often sub-optimal and result in significant per-hop and per-packet delay and/or jitter. As a result, multi-hop wireless networks are a harsh environment for realtime, streaming applications such as VoIP and IPTV. We present a new MAC paradigm where nodes first use simple local coordination mechanisms to agree upon a low-delay schedule for their transmissions, and then continuously re-use the schedule (making slight adjustments when needed) to minimize jitter. We focus on the context of wireless mesh networks carrying delay-sensitive streaming data over multi-hop paths, and on the goal of improving the end-to-end delay and jitter experienced by most packets. We compare our approach with IEEE 802.11 DCF via simulation. We show that our approach results in most packets experiencing negligible jitter and comparable or lower end-to-end delay.
