Abstract

The ACM Symposium on Virtual Reality Software and Technology (VRST) has become one of the major scientific events in the area of Virtual Reality since its debut in 1994. In October 2008, we are very pleased to welcome this conference for the first time to France, where it takes place in the historic city of Bordeaux. Following VRST, we are also organizing the national meeting of the French National Association for Virtual Reality. During this week, Bordeaux becomes the Virtual Reality capital, hosting many national and international experts in the field. Among them are our two distinguished keynote speakers: Ming Lin from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and Alain Berthoz from the College de France, Paris.

This year, VRST received more than 120 submissions (full papers and short papers) from many labs around the world. The international program committee accepted 12 full papers and 25 short papers. The full paper acceptance rate was 17%, and the total acceptance rate was 30%. The program also includes one panel session, 30 poster presentations and 10 demonstrations.

Preparing an event of this size requires the coordinated efforts of a large number of people and we would like to express our thanks to all of them. The authors of the submissions and our colleagues attending the conference have made this event possible. The members of the international program committee and the external reviewers did a tremendous job putting together a high quality program. Each full paper was reviewed by at least four experts, and each short paper was reviewed by at least three experts.
