The evolution of virtualization

Published: 01 March 2009 Publication History

Abstract

Virtualization is moving out of the data center and making inroads with mobile computing, security, and software delivery.

Supplementary Material

Supplementary Figure 1 (fig1supp_vmotion.jpg)
VMware's VMotion technology is designed to move a running virtual machine instantaneously from server to server. The machine's state is encapsulated by a set of stored files, with VMware's cluster file system allowing both the source and the target ESX server to access these virtual machine files concurrently.
Supplementary Figure 2 (fig2supp_opteron.jpg)
AMD's quad-core Opteron processor with the company's latest generation of virtualization support, called AMD-V, is designed to reduce the performance overhead of software-based virtualization. AMD-V's Rapid Virtualization Indexing technology allows virtual machines to directly manage memory using hardware rather than software resources.
Xen and the Art of Virtualization (xenandtheartofvirtualization-2003.pdf)
The Xen x86 virtual machine monitor.
