New vertical handoff algorithm based on hysteretic level

Published: 29 July 2008 Publication History

Abstract

This paper proposes a new vertical handoff algorithm in heterogeneous wireless networks which are composed of cellular network (CN) and wireless local network (WLAN). It is an amelioration of the traditional handoff algorithm based-on hysteretic level, which utilizes two levels in different handoff directions and makes handoff decision in a probability which is a function of the received signal strength indicator (RSSI). Simulations show that our method could increase the available bandwidth and lower the number of handoffs only at cost of a little blocking probability which is tolerable to traffics in packetswitch networks.
