Energy-based selective cluster-head rotation in wireless sensor networks

Published: 29 July 2008 Publication History

Abstract

In wireless sensor networks energy-efficiency is a big challenge due to the limited battery power of sensor nodes. Using a localized chain structure and one cluster-head, PEGASIS (Power-Efficient Gathering in Sensor Information System) achieves significant improvement over the existing protocols like LEACH. In this paper we propose EBSCR (Energy-Based Selective Cluster-head Rotation) protocol, which further enhances PEGASIS. It does not change the cluster-head every round to reduce the energy consumption caused by cluster-head rotation. Simulation results show that the lifetime of the nodes with EBSCR is extended about 20% compared to that of PEGASIS.
