Waging wars in wangba: political policy and social practice in Chinese MMO culture

Published: 26 April 2009 Publication History

Abstract

This proposed paper will explore the relationship between government policies on and social practices in Chinese internet cafés (wangba), especially in regards to the culture of massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG). By combining work on current-day aspects of Chinese MMO and wangba culture with historical precedents in both technological imports and social responses to government pressures, I hope to shed light on the complex socio-political status of MMOs and wangba in modern Chinese society.
