It is our great pleasure to welcome you to VTDC-09 -- the Third International Workshop on Virtualization Technologies in Distributed Computing.
Virtualization continues to play an increasingly important role in distributed computing systems - within data centers, across Grid federations, and providing the basis for the Infrastructure-as-a-Service model that is at the core of Cloud computing.
As in its previous offerings, the VTDC workshop continues its tradition of highlighting cutting-edge research in this field and providing a forum for discussion involving academia, industry, and research labs. Our committee of experts in the field selected papers that make up a strong technical program, with papers representing a spectrum of projects from Europe, Asia and the USA.
We look forward to a productive day of technical sessions and interactions among the VTDC attendees, and hope that our attendees will also enjoy the ICAC conference and the countless activities and sights that the beautiful city of Barcelona has to offer. Bienvenido!

Enabling and optimizing pilot jobs using xen based virtual machines for the HPC grid applications
The primary motivation for uptake of virtualization have been resource isolation, capacity management and resource customization: isolation and capacity management allow providers to isolate users from the site and control their resources usage while ...

The combination of virtual server technology and the Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) approach to utility computing promises to revolutionize the way in which distributed software services are deployed. Server virtualization technology can be used to ...
Towards a uniform self-configuring virtual private network for workstations and clusters in grid computing
The rising popularity of grid computing makes the issues of growth, security, and access critical in deploying and maintaining well-functioning grid systems. Overlay networks (ON)provide a framework to deal with these issues, but current techniques ...
An SLA-based resource virtualization approach for on-demand service provision
Cloud computing is a newly emerged research infrastructure that builds on the latest achievements of diverse research areas, such as Grid computing, Service-oriented computing, business processes and virtualization. In this paper we present an ...
Experimental study of large-scale computing on virtualized resources
Parallel applications have a pressing need for the utilization of more and more resources to meet user's performance expectations. Unfortunately, these resources are not necessarily available within one single domain. Grid computing provides a solution ...
Investigating suitability for server virtualization using business application benchmarks
Server virtualization is now required for data center systems to reduce the number of servers. However, it is still unclear which business applications are suitable for virtualization. We present our evaluation results for four types of business ...
Improving the live migration process of large enterprise applications
Recent developments in virtualisation technology have resulted in its proliferation of usage across datacentres. Ultimately, the goal of this technology is to more efficiently utilise server resources to reduce Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) by ...
Toward dependency-aware live virtual machine migration
The most powerful characteristic of any machine virtualization technology is its ability to adapt to both its underlying infrastructure and the applications it supports. Possibly the most dynamic feature of machine virtualization is the ability to ...
A live storage migration mechanism over wan and its performance evaluation
Live migration of virtual machines is a key technology for the next generation of IaaS cloud services, contributing to dynamic portability and mobility of VM-based services among datacenters. The practical use of live migration, however, is still ...
