Student development of web services for the STEM disciplines

Published: 28 March 2008 Publication History

Abstract

We have demonstrated in our past work the value of using web services to allow computer science students at different universities to work together on the same project [9]. We are now developing web services to expose scientific data currently only available as html pages in response to user requests. Our initial results show that it is feasible for computer science students to develop data-oriented web services and value-added web services for the scientific, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines including space, weather and geological data. Our continuing work focuses on involving faculty and students in the STEM disciplines so that they will be prepared to maintain and expand these web services.
