Personal media data organization and retrieval in e-learning: a collaborative tagging based approach

Published: 23 October 2009 Publication History

Abstract

Due to the large quantities of available media content, effective organization to support fast browsing and retrieval is important to multimedia database applications including e-Learning. Traditional subject indexing approach of information organization only allows users to access data via controlled vocabularies generated by experts. For media items with rich and complex semantics, it is not suitable to classify them into predefined categories. In this paper, we introduce a collaborative tagging based approach for multimedia content organization, based on which users can derive personalized views of media items, as well as execute personalized search by specifying customized semantic feature vectors. To illustrate the potential of our approach, some case studies are conducted upon an underlying recipe database for an online cooking learning system.
