Using new media to create integrating art therapy: animation therapy

Published: 16 December 2009 Publication History

Abstract

This project aims to adopt the successive approximation method of art therapy and to develop a therapeutic method in order to reduce the broad spectrum of problems among children and adolescents caused by the excessive use of video games and mass media.
These days, South Korea's media environments and digital network have a greater impact on the people's lives than any country's digital media environments due to the fact that it has the world's highest internet usage. The new media and information society through the internet has grown rapidly into a massive internet network world. Since teenagers have become excessively immersed in the internet it has become public concerns.
In this regard, our research involves using a wide variety of experiential art therapy in the form of, for example painting, music, drama, theater and other performing arts. The animation therapy combines art therapy with new media in order to reduce teenagers' problems and help them control their stress and anxiety caused by the compulsive use of media for users already familiar to the digital media environments.
We intend to develop web-based integrating art therapy tools that will help potential clients. The research group will consider working prototypes of Kino-ani drama therapy and animation therapy, and conduct art therapy experimental workshops as well. Furthermore, the integrating art therapy tools will extend the use of existing art therapy to the digital media and pave the way for a more positive usage of new media.
