Systems design by levels of integration

Published:18 April 1977Publication History

ABSTRACT

Microcomputer population estimates reported in the press suggest that over 60 million identifiable units could be installed before 1980, and that the rate of installation in the 80's may be greater than in this decade. In support of the rapid microcomputer usage growth we should expect increased emphasis on systematic approaches to standardization of which the level of integration concepts could be the framework. We suggest that the level of integration structure is a normal approach for many human activities including computer design. We then discuss the level-of-integration of interest to microcomputer system designers. Next a set of criteria for evaluation the quality of a particular multilevel architecture is reviewed and then used to examine the PDP-11 system.
