P2P group communication with layer-aware FEC

Published: 29 October 2010 Publication History

Abstract

P2P-Streaming has become of high interest in the last years, since it reduces the load on expensive servers, due to the participation of clients in the media transmission. Furthermore, if it is properly designed, P2P content delivery in combination with the Scalable Video Coding (SVC) can be an adequate technique for group communication, for which the main requirement is a low delay. The delay constraints for interactive group communication impose additional limitations for error recovery, which is necessary to overcome phases with problems within the overlay resulting in packet losses. In this paper, the benefits of using Layer-Aware FEC (LA-FEC) in combination with SVC for P2P Group Communication are shown. These approaches help to overcome phases with packet loss in the network, providing a better solution than traditional FEC with SVC. The LA-FEC concept is further extended to unequal source block length for the different layers, which improves the performance by exploiting the heterogeneous tree structure within the P2P overlay.
