All hands on deck: a new approach to staff development

Published: 24 October 2010 Publication History

Abstract

Why do staff ask for more technical training, yet don't attend scheduled training sessions? Why is our by-request training program underutilized? At the same time, why must we consistently turn away staff from our annual faculty training camp? These are questions that the Client Services team in Information Technology at Lewis & Clark College has struggled with for years. We could see the success of our Faculty Technology Institute, both in improving technical skills as well as in helping build strong partnerships with faculty. An additional side benefit of the week-long camp is the creation of a learning community for participants. We wondered how or if we could adapt this Institute into something valuable for staff with no increase in budget or staffing. Meanwhile, the Human Resources Employee Training and Development Manager was also looking for ways to revamp Human Resources staff training and foster a sense of community in college staff, again with no increase in budget or staffing. We decided to combine resources and so was born Staff Development Days.
Staff Development Days was offered for the first time this past March. We had three days of technology and human resources workshops offered during this time. Over 100 staff members registered to attend anywhere from one to nine of the eighteen workshops offered. It has been deemed a success and we are already planning for next year.
This paper will discuss how we landed upon Staff Development Days, the structure and logistics of the three-day event, our partnership with Human Resources, how it was ultimately received by our staff, and how we plan to move forward in the future
