XMLGuide: an open format language for audio guides

Published: 08 November 2010 Publication History

Abstract

Contemporary museums extend their cultural message through the use of different digital technologies. One of the most popular is audio guide providing multilingual guidance to museum's visitors. This method of cultural content delivery has numerous advantages but also several drawbacks. Museums have to spend a lot of money on content preparation, and then they have to buy and maintain costly devices. As a result, only big and well founded museums with significant numbers of visitors may afford advanced audio guide systems. Such disadvantages can be simply reduced by moving audio guide content to visitor's device: a mobile phone, a smartphone, an iPod, etc. Also, content creation may be, to some degree, passed to the community. To afford such situation, creation of content should be enabled on different platforms and produced content should be available on heterogeneous devices. This cannot be afforded without adequate standards, especially common language, describing an audio guide content. In this paper we propose a dedicated, open format language for audio guides. A content prepared in such format can be used on various devices, while its open specification secures vide accessibility for application and content developers.
