Social aspects of music and interactive technologies in facilitating face-to-face interactions in third places

ABSTRACT

Emerging communication technologies are fundamentally changing our social lives. The relationships between our new digital and traditional physical social activities are changing dynamically, continuously evolving, rapidly integrating with one another. This paper describes research motivation and work-in-progress towards an investigation of social aspects of music and interactive technologies within the context of 'third' places such as bars, cafes, clubs, etc. The goal of this research work is to create methods, tools and guidelines to inform the design of novel systems that help lower social barriers and facilitate natural (face to face) interactions between strangers in co-located scenarios.

    This short research paper concisely presents two studies aimed at understanding social factors related to music. More precisely, it explores the way people perceive experiences and engage in relationships in public spaces. The first prototype used cultural probes to explore social ties and routine daily activities. In an experiment, ten users performed tasks for a period of four to five weeks. The recorded results provide fruitful research insights regarding the role of music in groups and the formation of social ties. The second prototype-Saturday Morning Classics, a Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/saturdaymorningclassics/) and Web site (http://classicstv.m-iti.org/)-presents complementary facts about music and video familiarity among group members. A further goal of this current project is to gain a deeper understanding of place-based human interaction opportunities. Despite its length, this paper presents interesting findings, as well as future plans for the study of interactive technologies that drive social interactions. Online Computing Reviews Service
