Practical uses of cloud computing services in a Japanese university of the arts against aftermath of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake

Published:15 October 2012Publication History

ABSTRACT

Tokyo University of the Arts, which is one of the National Universities of the Arts in Japan, was also affected by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. Many stored art items in our museums were destroyed and many events were postponed or cancelled. The Art Media Center, which manages the campus networks and the IT policies, used cloud computing services to overcome these disabilities. For instance, we used the movie streaming service "Ustream" to deliver a movie by the president of our university to substitute for our canceled graduation and entrance ceremony. We also used the cloud backup storage service "Dropbox Teams" for disaster recovery. By cooperating with other universities, we established a committee called "RICC" to promote the activities of cloud computing and we are now constructing an experimental wide area distributed private inter-cloud computer network. Through explanation of these projects, we will detail for sustainable administration on a University of the Arts in Japan.
