Not so long ago in-vehicle human-machine interaction could be considered a settled affair: people knew how to operate the steering wheel and pedals, they knew how to shift gears, and they could tune their radios. Then came mobile phones, and everything started to change. Drivers wanted to do more than just drive . they wanted to chat with their friends, and soon they wanted their cars to provide the types of information and entertainment that had previously been available only in their homes and offices. Today, as a result of spectacular advances in ubiquitous computing, drivers have myriad sources of information and entertainment at their disposal. However, in-vehicle human-machine interaction is anything but a settled affair. This fact provided the impetus for organizing the AutomotiveUI conference series. AutomotiveUI, the International Conference on Automotive User Interfaces and Interactive Vehicular Applications, brings together researchers and practitioners interested in the technical and the human aspects of in-vehicle user interfaces and applications.
