Media-based social interaction patterns: a case study in an online civic mobilization

Published: 29 October 2012 Publication History

Abstract

Given that social media systems facilitates the participation of individuals in traditional forms of civic mobilization, including real-world protests, it is opportune to investigate how online civic mobilization on social media can be described in terms of the actions performed by users and the sharing of media: this can be achieved by measuring the corresponding social interactions. Extending our previous work, we present a technique for representing, mining and measuring media-based social interactions in order to detail both the actions performed by users and the sharing of media objects. We applied our technique to detail the social interactions involving Facebook users in an online civic mobilization in Brazil. We were able to extract and to evaluate rules which allow highlighting the corresponding collective behavior: the results show that users maintain a consistent collective behavior in different moments of the mobilization.
