ABSTRACT
Decolorization, also known as color-to-gray, plays a vital role in digital printing, monotone e-paper display and single channel image processing. While recent research focuses on retaining as much as possible meaningful visual features and color contrast, less attention has been paid to the speed issue of the conversion. Consequently, the resulting decolorization methods are typically orders of magnitude slower than standard procedures such as matlab rgb2gray function, which largely hinders their practical use.

Real-time contrast preserving decolorization
SA '12: SIGGRAPH Asia 2012 Technical BriefsDecolorization -- the process to transform a color image to a grayscale one -- is a basic tool in digital printing, stylized black-and-white photography, and in many single channel image and video processing applications. While recent research focuses ...
Image Decolorization by Maximally Preserving Color Contrast
ICPRAM 2014: Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Pattern Recognition Applications and MethodsWe propose a method to convert a color image to its gray representation with the objective that color contrast in the color image is maximally preserved as gray contrast in the gray image. Given a color image, we first extract unique colors of the image ...
Contrast preserving decolorization based on the weighted normalized L1 norm
AbstractImage decolorization is to transform a color image into a grayscale image with the preserved contrast and consistent details. It is an important tool in image processing and realistic applications, such as monochrome printing and e-ink display. In ...
