Towards effective organization of medical data

Abstract

The HL7 model is lately being adopted as a means to encode medical information and also as a standard for message exchange in medical information systems. In this paper we present a new storage structure for data-manipulation in evolving database environments, based on a set-theoretic data model previously researched. Firstly, we review the metadata structure of the model and we apply it to the healthcare domain, by modeling information carried in HL7 messages, which is serialized according to the specifications of the Health Level 7 Standard. Next, we define a storage structure that utilizes model features. Finally, we investigate the competence of existing database systems, including XML-enabled systems and Native XML systems to comply efficiently with the proposed logical schema.
