Web services for VANET: a service oriented architecturefor infotainment system based on mashup using open APIs

Published: 03 November 2013 Publication History

Abstract

We live in a society of information. Timely and accurately sharing of information among people can make our life convenient and comfortable. The Internet makes this come true. What's more, Web 2.0 technology takes the information development to a new level. With the help of Web 2.0 technology, web services are developed on the fly to better satisfy users' need. More and more business companies and software firms tend to offer their services through web services. These web services offer both data and specific services to the users rather than simply an application. Users or developers can represent relevant data to form a new application. Since the data is provided by different data sources and it has no defined standard to follow, it becomes a challenge that how to collect the required data from different sources through the Internet and how to process them efficiently according to users' needs. In this paper, we design a mashup system with extended Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) for VANET clients providing context-aware services in real-time. This design enables the system to retrieve data from Internet flexibly and also processes them according to defined logic appropriate for users. We also propose a structure which overcomes development problem for SOA developers. The proposed service model will enhance in-car infotainment system. We have implemented a system which incorporates several Google APIs and other real-time data from third party such as Ontario Ministry of Transportation. The presented approach can make drivers' journey more interesting and comfortable.
