Mobile User Interfaces based on User Attention

Published: 18 May 2015 Publication History

Abstract

Many of the challenges associated with creating a successful user interface are amplified on mobile devices. This is due to the limited screen space available. We are currently developing and testing new algorithms to present information in a more intuitive manner on mobile devices, particularly in Augmented Realty applications. We are developing solutions to integrate information about where the user is looking when deciding what information to present. This minimizes the amount of "visual clutter" that results from presenting all available information. While we focus on new interfaces to facilitate ease of interaction with mobile augmented reality applications, the ideas behind the work could also be applied in other domains. We conducted an initial experiment to identify candidate methods for information placement based on eye tracking on a desktop LCD. We then conducted a follow-up experiment to compare the most suitable candidate method against a naive approach on a tablet device (iPad). We found that one particular method worked well in terms of speed and accuracy in a simple information retrieval approach. The naive method also worked well, however with the new method based on eye tracking, the level of visual clutter is dramatically decreased.
