OS|Plug: Open Platform for Smart Plugs

Published: 14 July 2015 Publication History

Abstract

We develop OS|Plug, an open-source smart plug platform that supports appliance energy consumption monitoring, remote control and future consumption prediction. The smart plug platform is based on popular hardware platform (Arduino). OS|Plug can communicate with smartphones and a back-end cloud computing system through web services for consumption analysis and prediction. We observe low power consumption of OS|Plug system. Our smart plug platform can be extended to support advanced features, such as classification of appliance energy consumption profiles, diagnosis of appliance anomaly, big data analysis, privacy and security controls.
