Using Mozilla badges to certify XSEDE users and promote training

Published: 26 July 2015 Publication History

Abstract

XSEDE provides a large number of training opportunities for potential and existing users of its resources. Topics covered include basic High Performance Computing (HPC) skills and new technologies in both traditional and non-traditional HPC disciplines. A goal of this training is to enable learners to refine their skills and gain the competencies they need to be effective HPC researchers and practitioners. To gauge impact from this training, it is necessary to determine whether learners gained skills from it. In addition, learners want recognition and a tangible way to show others, such as potential employers, that they have mastered a specific set of skills. To make this possible, XSEDE has begun a program to award Mozilla Open Badges to learners who demonstrate competency in topics relevant to the use of XSEDE resources. This paper describes the pilot effort for this program, which offered beginner, intermediate, and advanced badges for competency achieved from participation in an introductory OpenACC workshop.
