StoryLamp: Sentimentality is Killing the World

Published: 04 June 2016 Publication History

Abstract

Attachment to sentimental items often hinders transitioning to a minimalist lifestyle. StoryLamp, a prototype Internet of Things ("IoT") smart lamp aims to encourage aspiring minimalists to part with unused sentimental clothing items. The lamp features dynamic images associated with the root of the discarded items' sentimentality, enabling users to preserve memories and retain the identity those items bestowed upon them. Through IoT technology, the lamp glows when one of the user's donated items is being used, positively reinforcing the user's decision to part with the item. This paper locates the significance of StoryLamp within the bright green environmental movement. It posits that the design of green technology must take into account the roots of environmentally harmful behavior in order to encourage people to make greener choices.
